Enjoying Some “G-Time” – Unique Girlfriend Getaways

Having a “Calgon…take me away!” moment?  Looking for an escape from the daily grind and ho-hum routine?  Take a break with your girls and experience the rejuvenation that a little “G-time” offers.

The emotional bond that women have with each other is one of the most powerful relational dynamics in the world.  Traveling offers many transformative opportunities but traveling with your “Gs” provides a fantastic way to reconnect with the women in your life and with yourself.

From a pampering retreat or adventure trip that challenges your physical, emotional and spiritual being to a volunteer trip that allows you to leave positive footprints, here are a few unique ideas you can consider for your next girlfriends getaway.

Aspen, CO:  The Aspen Divas offer a Ski and Life Coaching Week for Women.   This is a women’s only ski camp and participants will receive a combination of on-hill instruction and off-hill life coaching. The goal of this camp is to tap into

The Aspen Divas

the psyche of what allows each woman to perform at her best, whether she is mastering a powder run down Aspen Mountain, taking on the next big deal at work or raising a family.  This camp is taught by the “Divas”–Aspen’s best women instructors, and experienced life/executive coaches.

Taos, NM:  This area offers a great retreat from every day stressors because of its artsy community, natural beauty and culture.  It is a wonderful place where you can reconnect with yourself and friends. There are several labyrinths throughout the town where one can seek a “centering” effect.  Even though spas are always mentioned when it comes to “girlfriend getaways”- nearby Ojo Caliente and other spas have natural hot springs for soaking and rejuvenating.  Ah…How great does this sound?

Maldives:  Looking for a vacation where you and your friends can give back? The eco-preservation programs at the Four Seasons Maldives in Landaa Giraavru and Kuda Huraa offer programs where guests can join researchers and biologists in reviving the reefs and protecting sea creatures in the area surrounding the island.

McCurtain County, OK:  Voted one of the top 10 TEN Great Girlfriend Getaways in the Southwest, McCurtain County has a lot to offer.  From creating your own label, bottle and corking at “Girls Gone Wine,” to lots of outdoors activities, this county has an array of getaway activities to choose from.  Active girlfriend getaways don’t come any more active than they do in the Beavers Bend State Park area.
Gals can hike, bike, kayak, parasail, scuba dive and trout fish….and have another woman as a guide and mentor if they want.  You can also volunteer on clean-up activities that will keep the rivers, streams, lakes and forest pristine for future generations.

Costa Rica:  BikeHike.com offers a women’s only “Adventure for the Soul” getaway.  This trip combines biking, hiking, rafting, sea kayaking, Horseback riding, Zip-lining, yoga, massages, and hot springs.

Thailand, Bali, Costa Rica:  Hands Up Holidays offers several transformative getaways that inspire voluntourism and are tailor made for girlfriends.  A few of the favorites offer spa treatments, adventure activities but, most importantly, volunteer activities.  In Bali, girlfriends can help teach at a school for impoverished children.  In Thailand, girlfriends can help renovate an orphanage.  The Costa Rica itinerary offers an opportunity for girlfriends to help care for animals (including sloths, kinkajous, raccoons, owls, peccaries, monkeys (spider, squirrel and howler monkeys), macaws and parrots) that have been kept illegally as pets.

Maui, HI:  Consider the Peaceful Woman’s Maui Passage. The Maui Passage is a spiritual retreat experience that shapes and enhances the soul in ways that a series of healing sessions or day workshops could never attempt to match. This retreat places each participant into a concentrated healing space where activities, nature, the land, the ancient culture and other women guide you into a state of peaceful authenticity. It is mystical and beyond words.

Bali:  Spirit Quest has built several Eat Pray & Love Bali tours based on the popular book. One of the beneficiaries of these trips is the Bali Children’s Project, which raises money for educating local Balinese children.

Morocco:  In honor of Sex In the City 2, Wandrian Adventures put together an 8-day Moroccan girls getaway package.  Some of the package highlights include exploring Marrakech by foot and hot air balloon, trekking through the Atlas Mountains and meeting the Berber people who call the mountains home, traveling on camel back to a luxurious oasis, private cooking lessons and spa treatments.  The company along with their partners support “Education For All Morocco,” an association that provides lodgings and support to girls from remote villages in the Atlas who wish to pursue secondary education.

Around the World:  With eight different travel experiences, in destinations around the globe, Abercrombie & Kent’s Journeys for Women itineraries provide inspiring experiences for women of all ages. Compare daily life and cultural traditions during an interactive discussion with members of a traditional Sixaxa village in Botswana. Explore historic sites, from the Female Warriors at the Yangling excavation in Xian to the ancient Nabataean city of Petra, in the company of guides who illuminate these must-see destinations from a new point of view.

Bolton Landing, NY:  Every May, The Sagamore Resort offers a Girlfriend Getaway package that includes seminars on everything from fitness and fashion to meditation and yoga. There are scavenger hunts, special dining deals at top-rated restaurants and tons of other social and business related networking events.  All of the activities take place with the beautiful Lake George as a backdrop.

Around the World (2):  Did you know that there’s a travel club just for women? Based in New Jersey, the Women’s Travel Club offers trips to many destinations from India, Morocco, Nice and China to Rome Egypt and Jordan.  The trips are designed by women for women to offer experiential opportunities that are filled with lots of the sights and sounds of the destination.

Lake Tahoe, CA:  A recent guest on our show, author Sue Monk Kidd (The Secret Life of Bees) talked about how her travels during a crossroad in her life helped shaped the storyline for her NY Times Bestselling book.  If you think you have a story idea that you want to explore in a tranquil environment, there’s a weekend women’s writing retreat in Lake Tahoe that may help spur your creativity.  Who couldn’t be creative in Lake Tahoe?

South Newfane, VT:  If you’re looking to nurture and develop another creative side, Rock River Studio offers art and photography weekend retreats just for women.

Colorado Rocky Mountains:  Take a transformative adventure with a Mind Over Mountains retreat.  The retreats are unique and thought-provoking and they’re designed to promote growth and development.  A variety of outdoor activities are combined with life coaching workshops.  A percentage of the profits from the trips are dedicated to local, national and international women’s organizations.

Around the World (3):  Girlfriends…let your hair down with a Call of the Wild vacation.  This is the longest-running women’s adventure travel company in the world and they offer several itineraries to unique places all over the world as well as customized itineraries that will suit your needs.  Vacations planned by Call of the Wild are created by women for women and are paired with eco-friendly trips in the wilderness.
