PHOTOS: Surfers Compete In Annual Competition In California

HALF MOON BAY, Calif. (JCHAYWARD.COM) — Thousands flocked to D.C. this weekend to experience freezing temperatures for the second Inauguration of President Barack Obama.

On the West Coast, thousands of surf fans headed to the Mavericks Invitational surf competition in Half Moon Bay, California to watch some of the world’s most elite big-wave surfers compete.

Tickets for the event sold out at 9 a.m. as the 12,000 fans were welcomed by sunshine and warm temperatures.

Peter Mel, the 43-year old seasoned surfer, won the Mavericks Invitational and split his $50,000 earnings with the 5 top competitors.
